Green Industry

                    “Growth” is the topic of the moment. Everyone talks about it, everyone strives toward it. Yes, growth is essential for every country and for any economy. If we speak of a “global economy” then our industry-led growth has been the engine of it. All developed nations have harnessed industry as the main driver of their prosperity and developing nations aspire to it. But as the world is changing very rapidly so now it is apparent that this trend must also change. Now we need another kind of industry and another kind of growth. It would appear that the world of the future will be driven by “Green Industry”.

What is Green industry?

                    “Green industry” is an environmentally friendly industry. Green industry is producing environmentally friendly products, or products enabling Nature to recover from the damage imposed in the past, precisely by industrially driven growth. Green industry is focused on eliminating, or significantly reducing, outmoded dependence on oil, unfriendly green house emissions, and toxins of all sorts—chemical, biological, genetically-engineered.

Why green industry now?

There are many reasons to use Green industry. I think the main reasons are:

1. The world is facing the problem of global warming and the main causes of global warming are water vapor, carbon dioxide (CO2), methane gas, among others. According to International Energy Agency (IEA), our industries account for almost 40% of worldwide CO2 emissions.




2. Our industries are depleting our resources, such as water, coal, minerals, etc. which are limited, and non-renewable.

                    That is why we should switch to clean and renewable energy. Green industry can power our economies, improve the efficiency of our energy, recycle basic materials, and administer the use of potable fresh water, while it reduces or reverts contamination of air, soil, rivers, oceans, even the streets of our cities and the homes we live in.

What are the future prospects for “green industry”?

                    Changing our present trend is not easy, but now industries are taking concrete steps to encourage and expand the use of clean energy and improve their resource efficiency. India increased its renewable energy target to 14 GW renewable capacities by 2012. It has also emerged as a major producer of wind turbines. Most importantly, India has adopted a National Action Plan for Climate Change whose aim is to protect the poor and the vulnerable through an inclusive and sustainable development strategy that is sensitive to climate change.

                    Many other countries are also taking the steps toward Green Industry. China has reduced the energy intensity of its economy by over 60% since 1980. It plans to double the proportion of energy it uses from renewable energy sources by 15% in 2020. China has also become the world’s leading renewable energy producer in terms of installed generating capacity and has now surpassed Japan as the world’s largest manufacturer of solar photovoltaic technology. It is also expected to become the world’s leading manufacturer of wind turbines this year.

                    Now at the end I would like to conclude that , Clearly, there is a need for fundamental change in how we produce, consume and exchange goods. That is to say, how we ‘green’ our economies, our growth strategies, our transportation systems, our buildings and our homes. And in doing so, we will find ourselves building the industries of the 21st century: creating new jobs, maintaining the momentum of growth, recycling many of our basic products, and protecting our planet. Ideally, even our garbage and waste materials are a great green industry potential. Our children and our grandchildren will thank us for this.
