Need to reform education system

Some days ago I was chatting with my friend who lives in USA. We were discussing on the education system. I got to know lots of things about the US education system. When I compared the US education system with our Indian education system, then I realized that there are huge deficiencies in our education system.

Let me share the US education system with all of you, which I got to know fro
m my friend. In the US, the core curriculum consist of the English language and literature, one foreign language, mathematics, one social science subject and one elective subject in a year. They have wide options for choosing the elective subject ranging from world history to accountancy to computer programming. The US education system more emphasis on project works where students work in a group and present the group work in classroom. Not more than one science subject is offered in an academic year. Usually, biology is offered in class 9th and physics and chemistry in class 10thAnd 11th. In class 11th and 12th advanced placement course under College Board can be taken in different subject.

Our Indian education system rewards ability to memorize rather than ability to think critically and analytically. I think there must be a reform in our school education system. Following are the some suggestions for the reform –

  1. Primary school (from nursery to class 5th) must provide a mentally healthy and enjoyable environment to attain academic goal of imparting reading, writing, and arithmetic skills. There should be a system of identification of talent or proficiency in sports, music, dance, drama, poem, essay writing and fine arts. Minimum level of arithmetic and language skill should be prescribed for a graduating primary school student and school must ensure that all students acquire such minimum level.
  2. Middle school (from class 6th to class 10th) should further nurture development of social skill, mathematics and language skill, and non-academic proficiencies identified in primary school. The enjoyable and playful environment of the primary school should be maintained. Special care must be taken to prevent dropout by holding tutorial for needy students.
  3. School education system must encourage learning of concepts, and for that examination system should be re-designed on the pattern of concept-oriented system.

There can be some other steps also but the need is only for realizing, that there is a need to reform our Indian education systems then only any major step can be execute.
